We’ve come a long way baby! Blacks were transported in chains to America, legally treated as 3/5ths, bought and sold like cattle, and now we’ve got the hope of Obama. That’s a long journey and the Black Community is confused. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr tried to lead us to the mountaintop, but he was tragically cut down. Forty years later and I think it’s obvious, Blacks lack honest, unselfish, intelligent leadership. This single factor has forced the entire community to lose it’s way. God Bless Tavis Smiley and Tom Joyner for holding so many Townhall meetings, but Church can be dysfunctional. Any group that forgets it’s history of survival is bound to get lost on the way to the King Dream. We see we have lost our way in the thuggish actions of our youth and the hurtful words of our elders. We lack leadership and the debate has change from “The Back of the Bus to Cosby Critical.”
CNN’s discussion on race, led by Soledad O’Brien, is a perfect example of the lack of leadership. This is not the end all discussion on the “Black Experience.” Why? Who the heck is Soledad O’Brien in the Black Community? To share what it feels like to be Black, one should have common experiences or some credibility on the subject. Did Ms. O’Brien even earn her “Black Card?” Sadly the answer is “No!” Soledad is a journalist. Race did not open the door to her career. As a journalist telling the story falls short. The thought of someone sharing the Black experience and not being Black is like Elizabeth Hasslebeck with a suntan crying because she can’t use the N-word. It lacks credibility. I give my full respect to Soledad, but if you’ve never been to the back of the bus, it’s impossible to share the Black experience. What is Soledad’s “Black Experience?” Tavis Smiley got fired and was off the air. Without the scars, the effort lacks some credibility. Can a pacifist share war from a warrior’s perspective? If you don’t know, you need to ask someone. She did 99% of the stories.
What does it actually feel like to be “Black in America?” CNN’s perspective shares the same tired old stories of the same stereotypical people. The stories selected are based on the editorial slant of CNN. The stories were not selected based on truth in regards to the larger debate. We saw the traditional babies out of wedlock, the criminal element, and the educational success of the Rev. Michael Dyson. We hear these stories far too often and this is why the current leadership fails to advance. CNN failed to reach out to the common man. Instead of being completely critical, I would like to share my thoughts. My personal experience would never be shared by CNN. The truth is too painful. I was honorably discharged from the military for a promotion point miscalculation so “Be All You Can Be” was denied. This is discrimination and it’s legal. I was demonized by the American Red Cross as a union member fighting to help the little people who were counting on someone to tell the truth. This is discrimination. I got left behind by the Clinton Administration and from the back of the bus I led the drive to impeach this popular president. My story was never told. This is what it feels like in back of the bus. Race has little or nothing to do with status in America. The truth can be bought and sold. The single determining factor for success in America is “Access to Capital.” If you come from a family with money, you can buy justice. Race has little or nothing to do with success. Where you come from can decide where you are going. My Father died and left us nothing! The government even took his social security. That’s my “Black Experience.”
Race has nothing to do with success. Count the countless successes in the “Black Community?” Let’s drop a few names like Tiger Woods, Oprah, Obama, The Williams Sisters, The Negro Football League, and the Negro Basketball Association. Blacks dominate, but what do all these successes have in common? Someone cared when they were in trouble. Someone kept them focused on their way. They had access to capital to get an education, get them out of poverty, or to buy justice. Skin color makes getting justice and getting into college harder; but money makes anything possible. President Bush is a Harvard Grad. I argue “Black in America” is being left behind. Imagine living life gagged by the media, unable to share your truth? You have been “Blacklisted” or “Blackballed.” Imagine being denied future economic opportunities based on events of the past where justice did not prevail because only one-side of the story was told. Your life has been “Whitewashed.” Imagine hearing the chants, “Yes, We Can” knowing full well that you shared your pain only to have this truth ignored by CNN? Denied credit for your life’s contribution, am I a failure due to my race? Success and failure in America have so little to do with race. With access to capital, justice could be served and proper credit granted.
In conclusion, race is not holding the Black Community back. Our minds remain shackled. Past thinking forces us to be lost in a flawed world seeking perfection in the eyes of man. No matter how good one may be, it’s never good enough. If one reaches a plateau, you arrived there as a “Token.” If one miserably fails, they were expected to fail. Success is where we make it. Success is found where somebody cared and invested capital in a Black person’s future. We are lost as we become more “Cosby Critical” in our thinking. Now, we blame each other for failing as if the rules were always equal. We are clearly no longer in back of the bus; yet, some of us are way too eager to embrace a critical self-defeating psychoanalysis provided by the creator of Fat Albert. Blacks are lost and some of us are selfish. Sure, we have babies out of wedlock because some think life is all about me! This is not a racial trait, selfishness is a human reality. We need new leadership to keep us focused on what works. We don’t need a brand new whip. CNN missed an opportunity to share the whole truth and not just the truth as seen by Soledad O’Brien. By the grace of God, one person could make a difference and you’d never know. The media isn’t paid to tell the truth. It’s entertainment.
