‘The notebook’ Review

Posted on 05 August 2010 by Craig Frost

The notebook, a name so succinct and mundane you’d be forgiven for casting it aside as a film about a book of notes, and whilst that’s essentially what it is, a more befitting name could have been used. What if the notes consisted of nothing more than a shopping list, or a teenager procrastinating in school. Perhaps they drew a willy; That wouldn’t be a film, would it?

The film is not one I’d normally watch, but I put it on in the background and slowly – but surely – started getting into the story, and once I’ve done that, well, I can never stop watching. T’wud normally be a man’s secret weapon if English charm fails, as I think women are infatuated by the story, and by transfer of property, the closest person next to them.

So I have watched it once before, but I was watching the girl I was with rather than the film itself, and when that’s done, you just catch glimpses of the story. So I thought ‘why is this girl crying, this film is essentially about a vintage floozy committing adultery, the swine!’ And so the most prominent feeling I perceived during that period was not one of heartfelt emotion, but a cramp in my leg.

And yet it turns out the feelings expressed linguistically in that film are so semantically beautiful, so heartfelt and sincere, that it holds sentiment; but even sentimentality itself has been dubbed ‘the unearned emotion’.

I think love is transcendental, or perhaps metaphysical, something we’re meant to spend our life searching for, never to discover. The pro-verbal lapis philosophorum to a naive alchemist.

So I still don’t think that film has the right to be so tear inducing, the only person that dies is old, it was bound to happen soon.

But that film, it almost makes you want to fall in love. Almost.

Lindsay Lohan, You’ve done it again..

Posted on 03 May 2010 by Charlotte

I nearly kidded myself in nearly writing how innocent I thought Lindsay was. Then I thought again. This is yet another fiasco Lindsay has got her self into to stir up even more drama in her life. For what? I Don’t know.

Even though Lindsay has recently got the chop on a movie, that doesn’t necessarily mean she’s going to let that go through. Lindsay has got a new role right away. Well done Lindsay! Although it’s not the typical role we all expected. Miss Lohan is said to be playing ‘Linda Lovelace’ apparently a late porn star famous for her role in ”Deep throat”. Lindsay’s new upcoming flick named ‘Inferno’ isn’t getting the bash just yet, so we’ll just have to wait and see when it is officially announced later this month.

I think we can all quite agree what an absurd yet unsurprising role this is for Lindsay to play, yet i know i can’t deny how excited and wondrous i am just how Li-Lo turns out as a porn-star. It might even actually suit her..

Repo Men Rocks!

Posted on 30 March 2010 by Baco

“Repo Men” was action packed, full of blood and gore, and choice entertainment for anyone beyond 18. Forrest Whitacker was fantastic as an extra again while the star was most notable for looking like Eminem. The movie was like “Pulp Fiction”, “Lethal Weapon” and Terminator wrapped into one. I enjoyed it in a totally sick way.

The movie foreshadowed what Insurance and healthcare could become if greed is unchecked. I loved the play on the word “Repossession.” Insurance owns you before or after you get in the system? I loved the struggle between “Good and Evil” and how the film touched on the gray areas in between. Unfortunately, there were no heroes in this film to root for or against. All you could do is wish for the end, but I can’t tell you how or if it ended. I’d suggest you see the film to join the debate on healthcare, death, and dying.

In short, “Repo Men” was gruesome but “I Get It.” If you sell yourself to the Devil in a cheap suit your life is over. It’s just a matter of time before something else goes wrong. If you live in fear are you living at all? Healthcare and Insurance are two different things. Add greed and you get “Repo Men.” Way to go Hollywood for the two for one. Hot Tub Time Machine also gave some long forgotten actors some quality work. It wasn’t “Precious” and neither one will win an Oscar.

Would Truman Tweet?

Posted on 11 March 2010 by Baco

I’m not certain that you are instantly familiar with the movie “Truman.” It was a story about a boy who grew up on a hidden camera. His entire life became a show and Truman didn’t know. It was rather sad to see him deceived by everyone in his world. It was more painful to see him struggle to prove his reality wasn’t reality at all. Truman lived in a lonely world and desperately tried to escape to another even more isolated. Is this world “Twitter?”

As I see it, Twitter is where lonely people interact with a world that isn’t real attempting to share their reality and connect because they are lonely. It’s a vicious cycle, but is sharing nothing far better than living a reality alone? I think so and I must painfully admit, “I tweet therefore I am…lonely.” I also write for the Citizen’s Journal because I have something constructive to say. I share as often as I can in a race against time. Sharing is not about the single moment, it’s about the long journey and the time we spent happily or angrily thinking collectively. There’s some Truman in us all.

I tweet knowing Twitter is still in it’s infancy. What does the future hold for those of us who consistantly provide content? Are we destined to be the re-runs of bad television like we see from the 50′s? Are we “Petticoat Junction”, “Green Acres” and “Gilligan’s Island?” We very well could be, but is that such a bad reality? Tweet, my friends Tweet. We cannot predict the future or control time. Twitter could be “Free Television” in the future shared with the universe? Think about it? Think, but not as dramatically as I? Twitter may not be free at all and someday you could get paid. By selflessly sharing our thoughts, we could become stars by accident. What we share becomes our legacy and our reality. Be the best “Truman” you can be. Always be true to your heart and your audience. It might seem crazy to some but what is your reality? I love you all and I told you.

Oscars Hooray For Hollywood?

Posted on 01 March 2010 by Baco

The Academy Awards, “It is what it is.” It’s a spectacle where Hollywood takes 3 hours or more to give a statue to anyone or anything they decide is worthy. That’s entertainment? This is supposed to make us all dance and jump for joy? I don’t think so! Oscar night has become one of the most boring nights on air. We should sleep through the presentations and speeches and go directly to the “After Party.” Now that’s where the action is. That show would get better ratings than any dog and pony show we’ve seen in years and it needs no host.

What’s wrong with the Oscars? The audience is forced to sit and watch with no connection to the winners or losers. Basically, who cares! The award can be given to anyone the Academy decides is worthy. The Best Movie category has 10 entries and is taking the form of the Kentucky Derby. In that race the favorite seldom wins, but who is the favorite? Oscar is honoring “Endless War, Space Smurfs, and Child Abuse.” Are any of these movies “Worthy?” Again, who cares is not “Must See TV.”

In addition to the sorry lineup being recognized, the hosting duties are being shared by a “Wild and Crazy Guy” and a conservative most recently recognized for calling his daughter a “Fat Pig.” Now isn’t that “Precious?” It’s not like Oscar got “Blind Sided” on this poor selection. How will they manage to pull it off without stepping on their message?

In conclusion, the Oscars are now full of “Hot Air.” It is what it is an awards show where the audience has nothing to root for or bet against. The Kentucky Derby permits betting and that would keep some of us rivoted. Give out the awards in advance, tape the controversial speeches in advance, and go directly to the “After Party.” That would make me say, “Hooray for Hollywood.” I’d feel somebody finally got it right and is keeping it real interesting. Someone in Hollywood found the courage to show the ugly underbellly of the industry and permitted the celebrities we know and love to speak truth to power. Somebody cared and the ratings finally went through the roof. Imagine if Precious wins and Alec Baldwin was forced to talk about his “Fat Pig” comments? Show me the after party and blame the outstanding ratings on the alcohol? I’m watching this one because it could get real and ugly.

SEXY BOYLE KO BRAD PITTY

Posted on 27 January 2010 by massie

Is Brad Pitt good-looking ?? Well, I’m going to say NO ,because I’m a man, but A LOT of women will tell you that he is. But how come some people are beautiful, and some aren’t ? Can Susan Boyle be more attractive than Pitt ?? Actually, it’s juslt like about paintings. Some people find that the famous frame ‘Mona Lisa’ of Léonard de Vinci is beautiful, but I don’t. However, I do like ‘Guernica’ of Picasso. What about you ?? Everybody find polar bears beautiful. But why ?? It’s pretty the same about human beings. Our ‘tastes’ are determined by our social conditions. People ‘teach’ us what is beautiful and what isn’t. We aren’t free to judge by ourselves. We live in a world in which beauty represents the success.
NOTHING is born pretty. Beauty depends of our judgment. A polar bear is beautiful because we say that he is. The ‘thing’ needs our recognition to be beautiful/ugly. It can look a little bit stupid, but that’s the way it works. Another exemple : a guy loves a girl, he’ll find her pretty, but his mates may find her ‘normal’. Got the picture ? So, if today we decide that Susan Boyle IS more beautiful than Brad Pitt, she will BE !

Hard Second Album?

Posted on 17 January 2010 by em1705

Not for Vampire Weekend. From what I’ve heard this album sounds effortless. Vampire Weekend are one of the great left over bands from the new music internet craze of the 21st century. They have released their second album called Contra earlier on this week.

Their second album still has the unmissable catchy rhythms that seep into your mind and the cute sharp lyrics but they have also grown and developed into mature rock musicians.

The band certainly haven’t changed direction or turned a new path musically at all, but that a great thing in term of a band like Vampire Weekend. Who’s sound is still new and untouched by any other artist other than Vampire Weekend. There sounds cool, edgy and weird yet still allowing it to be poppy enough to make a main streams music impact.

This new album has changed and been tweaked enough to sound new and interesting without becoming untrue to Vampire Weekends first self titled debut album. All together I would say Vampire Weekend have made a Solid follow up and I think not only will this album make an impact but it is only the beginning of a great band who will stand the test of time.

So what do you think, have they moved there sound on enough or too much. Do you like the album?

Chris Brown…A Changed Man?

Posted on 01 September 2009 by Baco

To be or not to be, that’s not the question! The court has ruled Chris Brown must stay at least 90 feet or yards away from Rihanna and that’s the law. It really doesn’t matter if he declares himself a “Changed Man” because he’s a step away from being a “Wanted Man.” Can love tempt him to throw his life away for a breif moment with one so beautiful, that he would be willing to spend ten years behind bars with “Bubba?” This is absolutely ridiculous. This ain’t no Romeo story. It’s a nightmare of a reality like “Trapped in the Closet” that will probably happen. Chris and Bubba in the penitentary-kissing.

What has changed about this so called “Man?” Chris has had a few months to reflect on the many images shared of Rihanna both naked and the black and blue photos. What “Changed?” The bruises went away? The spotlight dimmed? He’s ready to hit again? I hope not for his sake. I did see Chris on Larry King Live. He was tongue tied. He practically stammered and stuttered his way through the interview. Did he say anything productive or inspiring to make us believe he changed? I don’t think so. I’m wondering, “Is he sorry or just sorry he got caught?” My point about this article is simple. I believe in second chances and fairytales come true; however, “The Law Is The Law!” Chris can’t change or run that, but will he try?

In hindsight, there were many warning signs this wasn’t love at all. Men don’t hit women, but a women in love can get her man to practically do anything. The question that remains to be seen here is “Does Rihanna love to be hit foolishly thinking it’s love?” This is my opinion. The entire music industry is at fault for building up stars and breaking them down for profit. It’s a selfish and abusive process that makes talented people prostitute themselves for the public’s pleasure. We’ve seen example after example of successes and failures. We’ve seen the bald, fat, freakish failures posted all over the tabloids. We’re the ones who made you? No, the industry is dirty. How many bumps and bruises remain hidden in the dark? How many kiddie porn events happen before or after they make it in Hollywood? This is no fairytale. Chris and Rihanna’s pain is not a Romeo story rewritten. They are being exploited for profit. What’s their reality? Changed or not, they must remain apart for 5 years. If tempted by Rihanna, Bubba will love Chris. Parting could be such sweet sorrow and revenge for Rihanna. Keep her away too? Few would cry for Chris for he didn’t learn from previous tragedies like R. Kelly. He got away because he left no bruises and no victim America cared about. How can we not care about Rihanna nude?

The Outer Limits?

Posted on 30 August 2009 by Baco

America is creatively lazy. Thinking has become a threat to our future existence because thinking of all possibilities can expose an ugly truth. We could discover that “People with power are abusing it for self-engrandisement.” Politicians screaming for us to compromise don’t actually care about the individuals they have taken an oath to protect and defend. We need to know the “Outer Limits” of civility and humanity. Rod Serling was a “Gen-yi.” It’s kind of a cross between a genius and a Jedi. He fought the forces of evil with his creative mind.

The “Outer Limits” on television again could allow us to reshape the boundries of Humanity. We could clearly define for a new generation what is “Good and Evil.” In an age where genetic testing, euthanasia, endless war, forced poverty and greed rule the future; we need to know “The Outer Limits.” Let me expound on the importance?

Picture a world, where having “It” is all that matters. Beauty is the “Mark of the Beast?” Ugly is in. Having the wrong color hair means “You are selectively removed.” The perfect smile places you in quarantine. Having the “X-Factor” is a curse? Picture a world where everything is upside down and there was nothing you could do to change things? Reverse the current thinking and see the ugly reality of imposed beauty standards on this world? Picture a world where “Ugly Betty Rules?” We need “The Outer Limits” to help us understand the evil we impose on each other just because we can. Life is out of control to the point where “No Fat Chicks Need Apply” in or to certain corporations? This is Hitler and it’s legal? If you test positive for “The X Test” you could become part of a permanent underclass? Government is trying to control insurance, result reporting, and to force testing. Nothing good can come from a positive result? Think about what I say and join me in saying, “Rod Serling was a gen-yi.” Justification for testing is “Yes, They Did!” What they did is up to who when the “Outer Limits” are undefined?

Michael Jackson’s Death Ruled Homocide

Posted on 24 August 2009 by Baco

The Michael Jackson mystery may never be solved, but someone will be forced to accept blame. First and foremost, there is no reason to issue “Milk of Amnesia” to anyone outside a hospital setting…period. That fact is enough to close this case and leave enough questions unanswered to keep the memories of Jackson alive forever. Is that what we want? Is this where the story ends?

The ruling of homocide permits the Insurance policy to be resolved. It permits the tears to flow and it takes the case out of the spotlight. I think that’s exactly what all sides in this case want. The investigation was botched the moment it started. Who gets controlled substances issued under multiple names from so many different sources? Who permits evidence from a crime scene to be removed before the facts are found? Sorry Janet, the facts are facts. Who concludes an investigation without revealing all the facts and outlining all the players and possible motives in this mystery? We don’t know who was with Michael and what access they had. It’s my uneducated opinion that Dr. Murray is the fall guy. We always knew he couldn’t avoid some level of culpability.

What’s the $64,000 question that I want answered? Did anyone else issue Michael Jackson any unauthorized doses of this medication? Did the autopsy account for all the injection sites and did the lethal dose level found correlate directly to the evidence provided by Dr. Murray? What’s my point? If someone other than Dr. Murray issued drugs to Michael Jackson unknown to the facts in this case, we certainly do have a homocide. We would be permitting a “Smooth Criminal” to get away. Why would we do that? The truth always comes out and the facts are the facts. Hiding the truth would only make Michael a victim forever or us slaves at his musical shrine. I don’t want that. We deserve all the questions answered. Should we wait until after his next billion records are sold? This investigation reminds me of the rush to judgement after former VP Dick Cheney went “Duck Hunting.” Not asking questions only serves a private interest not the public.
