“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” a statement that is becoming much too evident in the youth of America, but who is this beholder that decides what is truly beautiful? It seems in today’s worlds girls are starting to wear makeup younger and younger. With two younger brothers, I never cease to be surprised when I see their classmates with foundation, eye liner, mascara, lipstick etc. caked upon their faces. Young girls should be taught that natural beauty is what matters, but that is a difficult image to get across when everyone they look up too smothers their face in make-up. It gives these young girls the impression that to be successful in this world one must be beautiful. Take every eight year olds idol Hannah Montana, this young star idolized my millions is portrayed as a superstar only when her appearance is disguised by a blonde wig and excessive amounts of makeup. This whole dilemma become uncomfortably evident to me while at a family dinner. My nine year old cousin approached me with her purse, and proceeded to hand me her lipstick, now I can understand a nine year old with chap stick, lip gloss maybe but I rarely wear lipstick and I am eighteen years old! She suggested I put some on and was completely shocked when I responded that I did not want to wear any! I guess the fact that I was old enough to wear makeup and chose not to took her by surprise. I believe the young girls of our nation need to begin to understand the importance of natural beauty. I believe that what makes a girl beautiful are all the unique characteristics and qualities they posses, not the color of their lipstick.

Aw what a awesome article. I agree completely; although, I am 19 and wear make-up I see it all around me, as well. If I have a daughter, I want to keep her in the glass case until I know it’s safe she can step her feet out into this world without the beauty ads and judgement glares. I suppose she will be in a glass case until she dies. Oh bother.

Why are girls wearing makeup at a younger age? Perhaps, they are sexually aware earlier? Why wear makeup? Natural beauty doesn’t sell in Hollywood. Beautiful girls are a dime a dozen. Exploitable girls could become stars. Young girls get it. Hannah Montana’s life is a lot better and some are willing to do anything to get it. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and that’s the pervert who can make you a Hollywood star. It a choice. Do what they want or be a natural beauty? Those who can’t teach.
