How Serious Should you be?

Posted on 12 April 2008 by DD. Taco

Religion is a big thing in the world and it has had some negative and positive impacts on today’s society. When it’s taken to the extreme though it isn’t always so sane for the mind.

There are people who take their religion way to serious for their own health, they believe that they can’t do anything that the lord isn’t going to do for them. While some people may view it as a truth, wouldn’t you think it would be the opposite? I don’t think that God isn’t going to do anything that you wouldn’t do for yourself. These are the classical types of situations.

For some people religion will save their lives.

A neighbor of mine was a drug addict and an alcoholic, but as soon as he found religion, he found himself. that’s a good thing though right!

Now he is taking it to the extreme though, he cant sustain a stable job because, he “has to dedicate Sunday to the lord” while that could be a good excuse, if he is a serious follower, shouldn’t every day be the lords day? Why should it only have to be Sunday?

You know, it shouldn’t! I was once told that a relationship with god is like taking care of a plant, you have to pay close attention and water it everyday. So if u left that plant the whole week without water and waited until Sunday, wouldn’t it be dead by then?

I came form a family of Jehova’s Wittness, but like most religions, it shares a common flaw, the bible.
See, the bible was written by many people and it has gone through many translations, the most important thing though was IT WAS WRITEN BY HUMANS! So if humans aren’t perfect, how could you dedicate your life to something that isn’t entirely perfected. Not to mention all the translations it has gone through and every time it was translated it was written through the perspective of someone else.

There are a lot of good things we can learn form the bible, like, “thou shalt not kill” or treat your neighbor the way you would like to be treated. Well lets analyze this for one second: the act of killing is by definition “to deprive of life in any manner” and the act of murder is “to take a life for ones selfish act” so if that is true then that means that the whole concept of war would be out of the question then right?

Ok so why is it that the bible condones the act of war? When Moses is in the desert wandering for years, then it’s legitimate to go to the Caanans and have war against them?

It doesn’t make sense.

As a result though and my point is Religion is a good thing, but don’t obsess so much about it that it interferes with daily life because we are all humans and we all make mistakes, and that’s ok, but also remember that the people that wrote the bible were also human and they most likely made mistakes too. That’s ok though! The only problem is when you let it take over your life.

i could not disagree more with this article.indeed, the bible was written by humans, but it was through the inspiration of GOD,i.e. the word of god that these things were written. please take several textbooks on general history and bible history, compare them, and give the bible one more shot.

I hear what you are saying about the imperfection of humans and the associated writings attributed to them. I agree that zealots, specifically of the religious variety cause death and suffering to many and have throughout history. One only has to look to the crusades, the Salem Witch Trials and the murder of so many indigenous and native people across the planet to see religious fervor in action by zealots. People being very dedicated to their faith can be good and it can be bad depending upon their actions and beliefs. It is when the beliefs of one person overshadow and cloud their ability to respect the diversity of beliefs in their fellow humans that causes problems and not a book, even if it is the bible written by imperfect people. This is like the argument that guns don’t kill people, people kill people. The bible and other religious books do not cause people to kill or commit atrocities in the name of their religion or even make poor employment and educational decisions, but rather it is the composition of the person themselves, the mental state, and the ability to research and integrate what they have learned that causes them to do what they do.

Allowing anything to become out of balance in your life creates havoc. Moderation in all things is optimal if people do not want to develop mental illness or physical disease associated with too much drink, too much food, smoking, religion or any other thing taken to excess. I think your argument is more about human behavior and the fact that we all have control over how we CHOOSE to behave more than whether or not
